Poor Benedict

Dying. Oh my gosh this is wonderful.

Paige please tell me you’ve seen this.

Oh my god why does no one understand this? Sherlock is not a gay postive show

zoedangerawesome:

SHERLOCK IS NOT A GAY POSITIVE SHOW

SHERLOCK IS NOT A GAY POSITIVE SHOW

SHERLOCK IS NOT A GAY POSITIVE SHOW

The closest thing in Sherlock to queer representation was Irene Alder who said she was gay and then fell in love with Sherlock. (make of that what you will.)

The whole show is about two heterosexual men. And one of those men, Watson, spends about half an hour each episode telling everyone ever that he and Sherlock are not a couple.

That is not gay representation.

I repeat: that is not gay representation.

And fuck you if you think that is representation.

A show having a large slash fandom does not count as representation.

I’m sure there a many legitimate criticisms of Elementary, but accusing the show of being homophobic because Watson is played a women is not one of them.

I cannot say this enough times: Sherlock is not a gay positive show.

Sherlock is not a progressive show in terms of representation. It is about two white cis heterosexual men solving crimes.

The fact that Elementary has a women of color as a main character pretty much already makes it more progressive than Sherlock.

And furthermore if you watch Elementary you are under no obligation to ship Sherlock/Watson. I’m sure that there will be at least one other dude you can find.

And listen, Sherlock is a good show and Elementary existing  is not gonna change that. You are under no obligation to watch it. You are under no obligation to even acknowledge it.

Benedict Cumberbatch has welcomed the existence of the upcoming American Sherlock Holmes drama Elementary, saying that it would be “churlish or bitter” of him to feel otherwise.

Speaking at a Q&A about Sherlock in New York City, the actor responded to a PBS executive’s snide comments about the rival production by saying: “As we already know with the Downey Jr. movie franchise that there’s room enough for two, so why not three?

“It’s fine. It’ll be different and I don’t think it’ll take away the love for ours, and there’s no reason to be churlish or bitter about them or what they’re trying to do.”

Cumberbatch also described Elementary’s star, Trainspotting actor Johnny Lee Miller, as “a friend.”

*looks smugly at the churlish and bitter people of the fandom*

I’ve reblogged this quote before, but I still like it. Benedict being classy is worth multiple reblogs.

To all of the people hating on Elementary and saying it will ruin all of the gay porn

Ya’ll can all go suck on a great big bag of dicks. There is a difference, A HUGE DIFFERENCE, between having criticism about a show THAT HASN’T EVEN AIRED, and making whining post after whining post about how horrible the show is going to be.

You need to calm your collective tits AND GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE ELEMENTARY TAG.

All gifs but the last two belong to mind-splosion (though I admit I may have fixed one or two spelling/grammatical errors I found.

And this post is dedicated to Tori who was sad when someone reblogged something from her and removed the well thought out argument she posted. <3

Yes.  This.

Warning: Elementary Ranting and Potential to Cause Wank

ms-meryl:

SO. Watson is a woman. And this seems to make people angry. The biggest arguments that I see against it are the obvious: “this isn’t canon,” “Watson is a man,” etc. Admittedly I mostly see this argument from people of the Sherlock fandom, but I’m sure fans of the Ritchie series are saying the same. Maybe even some canon people.

Introspective Navel Gazer: Witty title goes here.

introspectivenavelgazer:

People freaking out about Elementary and Detective Gregson, let me drop some knowledge on you:

There is an Inspector Tobias Gregson in Doyle’s works. He first appears in A Study in Scarlet as a rival to Inspector Lestrade, and then also appears in The Greek Interpreter, The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge and The Adventure of the Red Circle.

He is not a Lestrade clone. There are differences in personality and how they do things. Lestrade’s more by the book, Gregson’s willing to play with the grey area — as witnessed in the Greek Interpreter, when Gregson overlooks Holmes breaking a window. Holmes even calls him “the smartest of the Scotland Yarders,” which actually is damming with faint praise.

Really, what would make my life complete is if they do show a Lestrade, but he’s the tiny ferret-faced man that Doyle described and not the silver fox of the BBC. That would be a nice contrast and callback to the canon.

However, if they really wanted to get my love? Cast a Hopkins — the newbie fanboy police officer. I’d love to see someone fawning over Holmes.

…oh my god. The goddamn sherlock fen are actually bitching about the inclusion of Gregson???

CANON DID NOT FUCKING START WITH MOTHER FUCKING CUMBERBATCH.

SIT DOWN. THE LOT OF YOU. SHUT THE FUCK UP. I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT. YOU HAVE NO FUCKING WORDS TO SAY HERE, YOU FAIL AT BASICALLY EVERY GODDAMN THING IN EVERY POSSIBLE WAY AND I AM SICK OF HEARING YOUR NOISES.

(I went with the Rex Stout date for the female Watson, but there is an older monograph from around the turn of the century (late 1800’/early 1900’s) that I could not for the life of me find the reference to)

CBS casts a woman as John Watson

tumblr makes thousands of disgusting comments

wow this is really lovely and by lovely I mean disappointing

There’s so much internalized misogyny on tumblr that it makes me physically sick sometimes, and I see it most often expressed through some of the very popular fandoms here (Sherlock, Supernatural), to the point that I actually have both of those fandoms on my Tumblr Savior.  Y’all have a right to like what you like, but it gets pretty grossly hypocritical when I see young ladies who claim to be progressive, social-justice activists turning around and either shrieking about lady character A, B, or C is a whore, or even ignoring that lady characters exist entirely.

For instance, I know quite a bit about Cumberbatch’s Sherlock just through Tumblr alone, but I mostly only know the male characters.  I know there are women on this show, but they are referenced very rarely, and hardly ever seem to feature in fanwork except as spectators or small side-characters.

And that’s fine.  Again: do what you want.  But then I don’t want to fucking hear it when it comes to progressive issues, because the prevalence of white dudemale entertainment is so very definitely part of the goddamn problem.

Also: if you’re complaining about this because you’re concerned that it will reduce the relationship to a romance—um

um

UH

EVERY POST I SEE ON TUMBLR ABOUT BBC SHERLOCK IS ABOUT THE ROMANCE

WHAT

THE

FUCK.
